Second-year law students Shannon McEachern and Lane Skuteris are the 2020 champions of the NIU Law 2L Mock Trial Competition held on Friday, November 13. The other team finalist was Ashley Winford and Frank Murdock.
Distinguished Teaching Professor David Taylor, the Director of Trial Advocacy Programs commended the Trial Ad Society Board for putting together a great online competition.
“A virtual competition was a new experience for everyone involved,” said Professor Taylor. “The board did a great job making the competition work smoothly in the new environment. The competitors ably adjusted to an online trial, and it was a good experience for all involved,” he added.
The annual 2L Mock Trial Competition provides second-year law students their first opportunity to present a case to a jury. The high-level competition involves approximately half the student body. In addition to the 2L competitors, 1Ls sit as jurors, and 3Ls with trial advocacy experience are bench judges for the preliminary rounds.
Alumni Rebecca Chinery (’19), Alonte Holliday (’19), and Cody Follis (’19) judged the final round while Rachel Rolling (2L) and Austin Kelley (2L) served as witnesses.
