Mayor Richard C. Irvin (’98) won his bid for re-election on April 6, 2021. Mayor Irvin was initially elected the 59th Mayor of Aurora, Illinois on April 4, 2017, serving as the first African American mayor of Illinois’ second largest city.
Born and raised by a single mother in the housing projects of Aurora, Illinois, Mayor Irvin is a graduate of East Aurora High School. He also holds a B.A. from Robert Morris College and a Juris Doctorate from the Northern Illinois University College of Law.
A proud Veteran of the U.S. Army, Mayor Irvin served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He has taught at Robert Morris College, Northern Illinois University, and as a substitute teacher at East Aurora School District 131.
Mayor Irvin is a former Prosecutor for Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Program Founder for Aurora Community based Prosecutor Weed and Seed Program in Aurora. He also worked as an assistant State’s Attorney for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. He is the owner of the Law Offices of Richard C. Irvin based in Aurora, Illinois.
Mayor Irvin has served as a community leader by participating on the 708 Mental Health Inc. Executive Board, the Illinois Coalition for Community Services Executive Board, the Institute for Public Safety Partnerships as a Police Trainer and as a Big Brothers and Big Sisters Volunteer.
Mayor Irvin previously served as Alderman At-Large for the City of Aurora from 2007-2017.
