Professor Laurel Rigertas has been re-appointed to serve as a member of the ISBA Special Committee on the Rural Practice Initiative for 2021-2022. The special committee has been converted into a standing committee and will continue its mission to increase access to attorneys in rural areas of Illinois. Last year the Rural Practice Initiative matched and provided financial support to four summer law clerks and ten new associates who joined rural law practices. Professor Rigertas also worked on the Continuing Support Subcommittee, which provided training sessions for the law clerks over the summer and will be providing training sessions to the new associates this fall.
Professor Rigertas joined the NIU law faculty in 2006. Her research and scholarship focuses on the legal profession, particularly in the areas of ethics, professionalism, the unauthorized practice of law, and access to the legal system. In particular, her research has focused extensively on the history of the regulation of legal services in the United States and barriers to innovation in the delivery of legal services.
