Abigail Cabanin (3L) Honored by ABA Business Law Diversity Clerkship Program

NIU College of Law student Abigail Cabanin (3L) was honored at the virtual American Bar Association Business Law Section Annual Meeting for her participation in the 2021 Business Law Diversity Clerkship Program.  The summer program provides hands-on experience and exposure in business law to second-year law students.  Participating clerks receive support and mentoring in the business law field, exposure to business practices, and a stipend to cover living expenses for the duration of the 8-week clerkship.

Abigail was selected from a pool of outstanding candidates and assigned to complete her clerkship with the Honorable James Snyder (’88) who serves in the Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago, IL.  As a clerk, she became familiar with several cases which deepened her understanding of various business laws.  Additionally, she was able to observe ongoing cases and witness the advocacy skills of many lawyers.

“I was tasked with researching complex legal issues, drafting memoranda and court orders, and presenting my work,” said Abigail.  “These assignments allowed me to improve my critical thinking, legal writing, and communication skills. Through the clerkship I was also able to establish a support system by developing relationships with other attorneys and judges.”

Abigail was admitted into the NIU College of Law through the 3+3 accelerated law degree program for high-achieving students.  This program will allow her to finish her B.S. degree in Political Science and J.D. degree in 6 years.  Abigail is a founding member of the Business Law Society and serves as the Philanthropy Chair.  She is also a Notes and Comments Editor for the NIU Law Review Vol. 42.  Additionally, she serves as a graduate assistant for the Academic Success Program where she helps tutor first-year students in courses including constitutional law and civil procedure.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Diversity Clerkship with a deadline date of January 7, 2022.
