Andrew Lothson (’08) Named a 2021 CDLB 40 Under Forty Attorney

Andrew Lothson (’08) was selected as one of the 2021 Chicago Daily Law Bulletin & Chicago Lawyer’s 40 Under Forty. The honor recognizes the most talented young attorneys practicing in Illinois.  He was selected from a competitive field of 1,500 nominations and is considered to be among a group of up-and-coming Illinois attorneys to watch.

Andrew is a partner at Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP in Chicago, IL.  His practice focuses on complex civil litigation, including commercial, product liability, mass tort, intellectual property and class action defense. Andrew’s practice is national in scope. He has represented corporate clients under pro hac vice admissions in more than 35 state and federal jurisdictions throughout the United States. Andrew also regularly counsels clients on mitigating risk and navigating intricate regulatory schemes at the local, state and federal level. Regardless of the subject matter, thinking outside of the box to formulate creative solutions to complex problems has become a hallmark of Andrew’s practice.

With respect to high-stakes litigation, Andrew has successfully defended and resolved such matters in a variety of forums, including trial and mediation. He also has extensive experience drafting critical briefs and motions at the pre-trial and post-trial stages, resulting in numerous published decisions in jurisdictions across the country. For example, Andrew has developed and executed client strategy on class certification; Daubert issues; trade secrets; e-discovery; punitive damages defense; constitutional challenges; product recalls; warranties; indemnity; fiduciary duties; dismissal, summary judgment and directed verdict motions; and preparing high-exposure cases for eventual appeal. And as a member of the firm’s Appellate Practice Group, Andrew has a breadth of experience in federal appeals, authoring briefs in the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the First, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and D.C. Circuits.

Andrew’s entire legal career has been with Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP, starting as a summer associate during law school, then as an associate following law school, and now as a partner in the firm. Aside from the practice of law, Andrew is an avid outdoorsman and traveler, and spends a great deal of his free time pursuing these passions with family and friends. Prior to law school, Andrew played Division 1-A football as a wide receiver for NIU, earning three varsity letters and excelling academically. He remains active supporting NIU athletics and the law school as a member of the NIU College of Law Alumni Council.
