Omar Salguero is a past president of the NIU College of Law Alumni Council, serving from 2020-2022. He has been an adjunct professor at the College of Law where he teaches Immigration Law. He is an Immigration lawyer and the founder of The Law Offices of Omar Salguero-Duarte & Associates, P.C. based in Rockford and Aurora, Illinois. As an active and engaged alum, Omar serves as a mentor to students, helps with fundraising, and often speaks with potential students interested in pursuing a career in the legal profession. In February 2023, Omar was honored with the NIU Law Excellence in Leadership and Service Award.
What motivates you to stay connected with the NIU College of Law?
Staying connected with the NIU College of Law allows me to meet students and new faculty. I enjoy talking to students about the process of going through law school. I find each personal story inspiring, and I admire their efforts to reach their goals. Also, I like sharing my experiences as an immigration attorney with students and faculty because their questions and feedback re-energize me and help me stay focused.
What would you say to people who are considering a gift to NIU College of Law?
Don’t think too much about it; simply do it! It is clear that the NIU College of Law helps members of our community reach their professional goals. It is also evident that our local job market and overall economy needs a dynamic law school that cultivates and maintains a love and interest for legal knowledge.
What do you love most about the NIU College of Law and its mission?
The NIU College of Law mission it is not just a well written statement. It is a real institutional commitment that creates tangible results and a positive impact in our community. Simply visit our local court houses and surrounding counties, and you will quickly identify our diligent and ethical lawyers practicing law.
