NIU Law to Host Constitution Day Lecture 9/17

Join us on Wednesday, September 17 from 12-1 pm (CST) to recognize Constitution Day with Judge Joseph C. Pedersen of the 23rd Judicial Circuit.  1-hour general MCLE approved.

Judge Pedersen will speak on the judiciary’s constitutional role, its history and independence, and the challenges it faces today in safeguarding rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

Constitution Day, celebrated each year on September 17, marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The day serves as a reminder of the rights, freedoms, and responsibilities that shape American democracy.

Judge Joseph C. Pedersen is a Circuit Judge for 23rd Judicial Circuit in DeKalb County, Illinois. He was appointed by the Supreme Court in 2021 and elected in 2022.  He previously served as Associate Judge in DeKalb County since 2019 before appointment to the Circuit Court bench.  As a Circuit Judge he presides over a felony criminal trial docket.

He is also on several bench and bar committees including: Co‑founder and co‑chair of the 23rd Judicial Circuit Pro Bono Committee; Alternate member of the Illinois Courts Commission; Member of Illinois Judges Association’s Board of Directors; Member of the Illinois Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Committee; Mentor to first-year law students at NIU Law School; and Past president of the DeKalb County Bar Association.

He received his B.S. from Northern Illinois University and Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa College of Law.
